Finding keywords doesn’t have to be hard!
You know you need keywords to help people find your website, but do you know how to come up with them? It’s not a complicated process, but be careful! You could find yourself bogged down in the art and science of it!
Keywords are the phrases and words people type into search engines, like Google or Bing, that – hopefully – lead them to your products or services. Choosing the right words or phrases increases the chances of them finding your website before others.
Could you just use the words you think people are searching for? Sure! But I’m always surprised by words that show up in my research.
The simplest way to start looking for keywords is:
- Go to Google
- Type in the word or phrase you think best matches what your website visitors are searching for. Don’t hit return or enter!
- Google will autosuggest a list of search phrases.
In this example, let’s sat your website is about grilling. Type “grilling” into Google, and look at the suggested searches it comes up with. Google pulls these phrases from popular searches related to your topic. They are all great keywords to add to your copy because this is what people are searching for – as verified by Google!
Now what do I do with these keywords?
Of course, you don’t have to use them all. You shouldn’t use them all! But, find a way to weave some of them into your website copy. Then you’ll be well on your way to optimizing your site for search engines. Take your research a step further by running any of the keywords in the list through Google again in the same way. You’ll come up with a whole new list of keywords!
